God of War Laufey Gameplay — What We Know So Far
Updated 2026-06-03
God of War Laufey introduces a completely new playstyle compared to the Kratos-led games. Faye is faster, lighter, and more tactical. The brief gameplay footage shown at the State of Play gave us our first look at how she moves and fights.
Combat Differences From Kratos
- Faye uses a giant war spear — long reach, quick thrusts, and sweeping attacks
- No shield. Faye relies on dodging and parrying with her spear instead
- Stealth takedowns are a bigger focus. She can climb and ambush enemies
- Elemental magic tied to each mythology region — ice in Norse areas, sand storms in Egyptian, fire in Mongol
- No Rage meter. Instead, she has a Focus meter that builds up and lets her slow time briefly
Skill Trees and Progression
| Skill Tree | Focus | Key Abilities |
|---|---|---|
| Norse Path | Ice magic, giant lore | Frost spear, wall climbing, rune traps |
| Egyptian Path | Sand manipulation, stealth | Sand cloak, grapple hook, environmental puzzles |
| Mongol Path | Fire and horse combat | Flame spear, mounted combat, eagle vision |
You're not locked into one skill tree. God of War Laufey lets you mix and match abilities from all three paths. Experiment to find a combination that fits your playstyle.
FAQ
- Is God of War Laufey's combat harder than Ragnarök?
- Early impressions suggest yes. Faye is less tanky than Kratos, so you need to dodge and parry more. The combat is faster and more punishing.
- Can you switch between skill trees freely?
- Yes. The game has three skill trees (Norse, Egyptian, Mongol) and you can invest points in any of them. Respeccing is also expected to be available.
