God of War Laufey

God of War Laufey puts you in the boots of Faye — known to the Norse world as Laufey — Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. Announced at Sony's June 2026 State of Play with a twenty-minute gameplay teaser, this is the first God of War game to feature a female protagonist and the first to explore the franchise beyond Norse mythology.

What is God of War Laufey?

Set before the events of God of War (2018), the game follows Laufey on a journey that takes her across multiple mythological realms — from the Norse Nine Realms to the sands of Egypt and the steppes of Mongolia. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye/Laufey, bringing depth to a character previously seen only through flashbacks and Kratos' memories.

Gameplay and story

Santa Monica Studio describes it as a story-driven action-adventure with the signature God of War combat DNA — the Leviathan Axe returns alongside new mythological weapons drawn from Egyptian and Mongol lore. Players will unravel how Laufey met Kratos, why she hid her giant heritage, and what forces she fought before settling in the Midgard wilderness seen in the 2018 game.

Development team

Cory Barlog, now Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio, oversees the project. The studio expanded significantly to handle the scope of a game that spans three distinct mythological systems, with specialized research teams for each cultural setting.
